The power of touch

Garry Trainer‘Talking, touch and listening’ go half way to making a patient better says osteopath, Garry Trainer. ‘I give them 30 to 45 minutes, while the GP can only offer 10 minutes, so the time and attention are very helpful.’ Celebrity osteopath Garry provides a well-honed blend of acupuncture, massage and osteopathy for his clients to suit their particular problem. His clients include the rich and famous – Gwyneth Paltrow, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Coldplay, Robert Downey Jr, and Premier League footballers, to name but a few.

Garry Trainer was himself a talented rugby player in his native New Zealand, but a serious spinal injury meant that he was threatened with never walking again. After much diligent medical care and many non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, he got back on his feet. However, the NSAIDs gave him a stomach ulcer which left him with back pain and of course he couldn’t take the drugs any more. He discovered osteopathy, acupuncture and massage and got on the path that led him to London and specifically to his clinic in Primrose Hill.

Not only do NSAIDs cause side-effects, researchers have also recently found that paracetamol is not effective in treating lower back pain, and is only marginally helpful in reducing pain from osteoarthritis, according to research at the Sydney Medical School at Sydney University. The drug also failed to improve the quality of life of the users.

In a bid to help people suffering from back pain, Garry has developed Backaid, a combination of glucosamine and chondoitrin, made from shellfish. He recommends taking it for three months to rid yourself of back pain, and he even takes it himself!
